![]() After moving to Alabaster, Alabama from Atlanta, Georgia, Oscar and Cindy Hawkins realized that the children in the at-risk areas did not have a positive community program in which to become involved. "They saw the need, and stepped out on faith." In 1999, with some caring friends, the Hawkins hosted the first annual Neighborhood Kids Block Party, called "Up with Hope and Down with Dope". This event included city leaders, teachers, pastors, and community leaders along with children's activities and a free lunch. Our community leaders would encourage Staying In School, Avoid Drugs and Violence and raise positive community awareness. The Hawkins felt "If one child listens and says..."That person made it...I can, too." then saving one child would make a difference in our world."On July 20, 2002, they were provided the opportunity to open the first at-risk community learning center nestled in Valley public housing complex in Shelby County, Alabama. They called it Kids First Awareness Community Learning Center. On June 9, 2003, Kids Block Party and Kids First Awareness evolved into a non-profit 501(c)3 organization named Kids First Awareness Coalitions Programs. |
